House of Lords vs House of Commons



During the rest day at the London Chess Classic, the annual match between the House of Commons and House of Lords took place for the first time since 1999. Held in Parliament’s prestigious River Room, it was opened by the Lord Speaker, Lord Fowler.


The House of Commons seemed to be the underdogs, even with a former British junior champion in Rachel Reeves MP, but upset the odds with a 3-1 win. The key game was on the first board, where David Mowat MP fended off an enterprising pawn sacrifice by Lord Harrison, who has draws with Kasparov and Keres to his name:
