The Ginger GM visits HMP Wandsworth

Grandmaster Simon Williams, a.k.a. the Ginger GM paid a visit to our regular Friday morning chess club at HMP Wandsworth. Accompanied by CSC’s Prisons Coordinator, Peter Sullivan, and our prison tutor, Matt Read, Simon took on 20 of the strongest members of our club in a simultaneous display lasting a couple of hours. There were some hard-fought games which provided excellent practice for the Wandsworth players, who make up a large part of our England team for the World Online Prisons Championship in a couple of months. Famous for his attacking chess style, Simon’s grandmaster skills shone through in the end, winning 16 of the games and only conceding 4 draws. International Arbiter, and senior CSC staff member Aga Milewska was also present, though her refereeing knowledge wasn’t required - the games were all played in a friendly spirit!
