Other Projects

CSC is happy to consider any community project that furthers the mission of the charity. If you would like to talk to us about opportunities to spread chess in your community, please contact us here. Below are some of the projects we have been involved in over recent times.

Youth Justice

CSC has worked with Youth Justice Services in the London Borough of Southwark, delivering chess activities to young offenders in the school holidays. The sessions were two hours long, suitable for complete beginners who wanted to learn about the game of chess, and were offered on an invitation-only basis to individuals identified by the Southwark Youth Offending Team.

The programme offered a number of benefits to the young people involved:

  • Extra-curricular activities give students soft skills that are critical to future employability.

  • Chess develops social skills that help players think through the consequences of their actions and to take responsibility for them.

  • Chess builds resilience, teaching students to win and lose graciously.

  • A positive sporting achievement develops self-esteem.

  • Teaching chess gives students a positive life-skill and a pass-time that they can share with friends and family.

Junior clubs

CSC supports junior community chess clubs across the country, offering equipment, teaching materials, access to our learning resources, online accounts, and more. In some cases we provide a tutor to run the chess sessions. In others, we support the club with training for their own volunteers. In Portishead in February 2024, we provided training to a group of chess-playing teenagers, giving them the skills they needed to support primary school chess clubs in the town.

Chess in Africa

CSC was approached by Pascal Angulu, a teacher at High View Classic Academy in Kenya, seeking help with a project to teach chess to children in three schools in Nairobi. CSC offered advice and financial support, in conjunction with the Kasparov Chess Foundation. The activities were run by MiniChess Kenya in collaboration with the Nairobi Chapter of Sports Outreach Ministries. In total, 100 children from three schools benefitted from the programme. The participating schools were High View Classic Academy, Imara Daima Primary School, and the Red Roof Primary School, all located in Makuru near the capital.
