Lord Mayor of Westminster hosts CSC tournament

CSC organised the Westminster Schools’ Chess Tournament, held in the spectacular setting of the Lord Mayor’s Parlour at Westminster City Hall. The tournament featured teams of six players from seven different Westminster schools, with primary and secondary schools competing in the same event. Everyone played five games of chess, with medals being awarded for the highest individual scores and trophies for the best team scores in each phase.

The Lord Mayor’s Parlour is situated on the 19th floor, with panoramic views across much of west London, including the nearby Buckingham Palace. There wasn’t much time to admire the vista though as the chess was very competitive and the children displayed great concentration to set tactics to bamboozle their opponents. The standard was excellent, with some games ending in very neat checkmates and only a few finishing in a dreaded stalemate.

After the chess had finished, the Lord Mayor of Westminster. Robert Rigby, spoke of his desire to get the children of his borough more active, both in mind and in body, during his term of office. He then presented medals and trophies to our successful students and teams. St Marylebone CE School were the winners in the secondary competition while in the primary tournament St Peter’s Eaton Square CofE Primary School retained their title, fighting off a strong challenge from several other schools.

Our huge thanks to the Lord Mayor and his team for their hospitality, and our congratulations to all the competitors for conducting themselves in such a sporting manner throughout the tournament.
