CSC Merseyside Primary Schools’ Tournament 2024

CSC welcomed over 300 children from primary schools across Merseyside to the 8th edition of its schools' tournament held in the stunning setting of St George's Hall, Liverpool. In total, 27 different schools were represented, each putting forward teams of five children in four separate age sections.

Before the competitive chess began, the children received some lessons from CSC tutors, brushing up the skills they've been learning in their schools over the past year. The ChessKid team, fresh from their appearance at ChessFest 2024, were also there to run some fun activities and give away some goodies.

After an introduction from International Master and CSC CEO Malcolm Pein, it was time for the games to begin. The chess was played to an excellent standard and was highly competitive. No quarter was given and there was no respecting of past reputations - several school "B" teams found themselves finishing considerably ahead of their own "A" team. However, the children all conducted themselves in a very sporting manner, supporting their fellow pupils and showing respect to their opponents.

The results of each of the four sections are given below. The Dave Robertson Memorial Trophy was awarded to the U11 team from St Bridget's for their amazing performance, conceding just a single draw in 25 games of chess. Emma Shin (St Bridget's) was awarded a gold ChessKid membership for being the outstanding player of the tournament. Congratulations to St Bridget's CofE Primary School and to their CSC Tutor Graham Carr for the school's success in every section!

CSC would like to extend a huge thank you to Liverpool City Council for their support of this tournament and to Councillors Laura Robertson-Collins and Christine Banks for attending and presenting prizes. We are also extremely grateful for the continued support of the Angus Lawson Memorial Trust, both for this tournament and for our programme in schools across Merseyside. Our thanks too to the tutors, teachers, volunteers, St George's Hall staff, and to all the competitors for contributing to such an enjoyable day.
