Chess at the Guildhall

CSC was delighted to be asked to return to the Guildhall to run the 6th City of London Schools’ Chess Tournament. Held in the splendour of the Livery Hall, the tournament featured teams from 9 schools, all part of the City of London Corporation’s Family of Schools:

City of London Academy Southwark
City of London Academy Highgate Hill
City of London School
City of London School for Girls
City of London Freemen’s School
Redriff Primary School
Galleywall Primary School
Christ’s Hospital
St Paul’s Cathedral School

In total, 109 players took part, ranging in age from Year 3 through to Year 12. They all received a morning of lessons and coaching delivered by CSC tutors, before playing 6 rounds of a Swiss tournament in the afternoon. The tournament was played in a fantastic spirit: the chess was highly competitive but the players were very supportive of both their team mates and their fellow competitors. The chess was of an excellent standard too, with some students testing our tutors’ knowledge of the finer points of the Nimzo-Indian Defence! At the end of the afternoon, Deborah Bell, Strategic Director for Education and Skills at the City of London Corporation presented medals to the highest individual scorers, and trophies to the winning teams: St Paul’s Cathedral School in the primary section and City of London Freemen’s School for the secondary schools.

Congratulations to everyone who took part for their contribution to a brilliant day of chess!
